You Should Speak in Tongues (Part 2)

Keys to Help You Speak in Tongues (Prayer Language)

First, in order to speak in your supernatural prayer language you must be born again of God’s spirit. Romans 10:9-10 give us the road map to become a child of God and enter into the family of God. Some use the verse in Acts 1:4 &5 to make the case that you must wait for God to make you speak in your prayer language.

While he was with them, he declared, “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait there for what my Father promised, which you heard about from me. For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Waiting was only for the followers before the Pentecost and the availability of the new birth. But God gives you the ability through the new birth, but you must operate it. You must speak. The only difference between the mechanics of speaking in tongues/prayer language and speaking in your native language is that you have to think about what you are saying with your native language. Acts 2:4 is our first key on how to begin:

they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.

They began to speak, you do the speaking, but it was as the Spirit of God enabled them, and gives you your prayer language. Other translations:

New International Version
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

New Living Translation
And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

English Standard Version
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The word for ability and utterance in these verses is the Greek word apophtheggomai and is defined by “to speak out, speak forth, pronounce, belonging to dignified and elevated discourse.” In other words, it is not that God only gives the ability through the gift but also He gives the unique prayer language. You just don’t have to think about what to say. God provides the words AS YOU SPEAK. You won’t understand it!

When you speak in tongues you will not understand the words. The language is foreign to you. But it is a language “of people or angels” but God gives the words supernaturally. It is really that simple. A follower of Jesus who lives in India related a story about her mother and father. Her mother was a Christian, and father was a Hindu. She did not speak any English, but her father, being a businessman was knowledgeable of English but he did not believe in Christ. Her father got very sick, so her mother began praying in tongues over her husband. What she didn’t know, because she didn’t understand her prayer language was that it was english. So as she was praying over her husband he could understand her prayer language. Her father relates how what his wife was saying in tongues, who doesn’t know english, was Jesus saying to him that he needed to follow him to be healed and saved. Again it is perfect prayer but you will not understand what you are saying.

Speaking in tongues is a foundational manifestation, and it helps us to understand how to operate the other manifestations such as prophecy, words of wisdom and words of knowledge. It is like a dance. You move your lips and tongues but God gives the words that you speak. These same principles can be applied to the other manifestations.

What are the mechanics of speech? You must move your lips, you must open your mouth, your mouth formulates different sounds. Say, “I love the Lord Jesus.” What did you do? Your lips formed different sounds, air went past your lips. But you also had to first think “I love the Lord Jesus.” With speaking in tongues, you do not have to think about the words, rather God gives the prayer language. Just do it. Begin with a sound and then speak what you hear.

God will not make you do anything weird or odd. You will be in control. You will begin and you will stop. WHEN YOU SPEAK you will be in complete control and trust God. How can I know that it is really from God? God will not let you down. God wants you to worship Him by the freedom of your will – by speaking in tongues in your prayer language. God will do His part. He will supply the words – Luke 11:9-13.

One method that some one could use is what I call “Borrow Mine.” When you hear someone pray in their spiritual language try to imitate it. You could describe it as “borrowing some ones prayer language” to help you begin moving your mouth and making the sounds but God will give your unique prayer language. You will find that you can not imitate more than a few sounds and you will begin to develop your own prayer language. It may sound like Aliens, but don’t let how it sounds stop you. As a matter of fact if you begin paying too much attention to what you are saying you will probably stop. Until you get fluent in stopping and starting try not to pay to much attention to what you are speaking.

Another thing you can do is utilizing the alphabet to develop a more varied prayer language. Begin with A’s and go through Z. Try to formulate your mouth in different positions, begin with different sounds and you will find that you will develop a prayer language that sounds fluency.

Father, I impart speaking in tongues to the reader, In the name of Jesus Christ – Speak in tongues, move your lips, your mouth, let sounds come out of your mouth.
